Hello everyone:
You can read my blog or you can listen to the dulcet tones of my voice by clicking the button below.
Less than two months into his first term as Mayor of NYC, Eric Adams has done something really bad. He needs to be called out and Friend Without Benefits is ready!
This past week, Mayor Eric got really pissed off at a small headline in the ever-shrinking Daily News that quoted a source saying he got “beat up” in Albany over his push to stiffen the lenient bail reform law. Glaring at the City Hall Press Corps Adams said, “I’m a Black man that’s the mayor. But my story is being interpreted by people that don’t look like me. We gotta be honest about that. I say that to all your owners of your papers, your editorials — diversify your newsroom so I can look out and see people that look like me.” And then he patted himself on the back and said he’s doing “a darn good job.”
Lots wrong with this. Let’s go down the list.
- Mayor Adams went to Albany to use his powers of persuasion on that pathetic pair of legislative leaders, Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Carl Heastie. And guess what? They told him to take his bail toughening ideas and shove ‘em. They claim there’s no evidence that the let ‘em loose legislation contributes to an increase in crime. Yeah, right. But dear subscribers, Adams’ quest was doomed from the start. Why? Here’s why…
- So the new Mayor of NYC ambles up to Albany and sits down with two of the most powerful people in that godforsaken city. Did he actually think they were going to crown him the savior of New York by changing their coveted and much-defended bail reform legislation? If that would have happened Adams would have gotten all the good press and they would have had egg all over their faces. Adams would have walked away with a huge win and they would have looked like a couple of schmucks who’ve helped let criminals run rampant and now have had to backtrack.
- Where was Governor Yochul Hochul in all of this? She ain’t gonna bail out Eric. Welcome to the way the game is played upstate, Eric baby.
- But here’s where it gets really really bad. Instead of sticking with his spin that he had cordial talks in Albany, that he’s going to continue to fight for the safety of all New Yorkers, what did Adams do as soon as he got back to City Hall?
- He played the race card. He said he was being criticized by white reporters and editors because he is Black.
All I can say is shame on you Mr. Mayor. You crapped out in Albany and you’re crying racism? Shame shame shame, shame on you.
You certainly didn’t play the race card when you were endorsed for Mayor by the Daily News, the Times and the Post. Same (white) editors, same (white) reporters! Oh and BTW, I haven’t seen The New York Times, that bastion of journalistic integrity, cover what Adams said to the City Hall reporters. Is that how The Times has treated other politicians who’ve lambasted the media? Why is The Times giving Adams a pass as he threatens to stop doing news conferences?
But I digress, back to Adams. Mr. Mayor, you’ve unfairly unloaded on the City Hall press corps, the most experienced and professional reporters in NYC.
It will be interesting to see how they will treat you going forward. It could be they’ve been so beat up by their woke corporate masters that they will just roll over, or your tirade may be a wake-up call for them to cancel your honeymoon. No more softball stories when you have a shtickle fish.
Eric, this is New Yawk with the toughest, street-savviest, ballsiest journalists anywhere to be found. Grow a thicker skin. Cut the racism crap.
It’s a bullshit excuse and you know it!

You left out an obvious point, FWoB — the legislators with whom Hizzoner went to do battle share his ethnicity!!
Question: does everyone agree that Gov. Yokul always looks dim? And is she really?
I totally agree with your analysis of this situation with the Mayor. I think his honeymoon is already over and he better figure out how to deal with the terror in the subway or he’s going to be a one term Mayor. I enjoyed listening to your podcast. Well done!
Thanks Dave. It is great to get your experienced view of things. Adams wanted the job and was supported by the press. Now comes the hard part. Solving some of the cities problems in order to continue to earn that support. NYC is rooting for ya. Please improve our city.
Well phrased, as was your mellifluous narration. Mayor Adams relied on a race-based blame game. Perhaps this further reveals his inclinations. Such posturing only works for demagogues and the weak, not for those who make improvements.
Crime will decline simply when those in government and the community acknowledge and attack those who commit the crimes, instead of their preoccupation with allegations of police and systemic racism. A quick review of past American history reveals that the majority of those convicted, jailed, and sometimes executed for crimes, were white people (all ethnicities and religions welcomed). With some exceptions, bigotry was not called into the equation. The criminal was just found guilty. In contrast, how is it that now, in our more enlightened modern times, we regressed, according to some, to a more racist police and judiciary; that with prejudicious we created the current problem of very significant black crime. Those who think that way blame the crime’s victim of guilt, not the criminal.
Did our teachers really believe the dog who ate our homework was at fault and not our own failure to do the work? It seems that way in the modern conversation about crime – black only, of course.
I was just telling my friend about that.
Wonderful views on that!
