Have you ever heard someone say something that is such an outright lie you can’t believe the person had the nerve, the temerity, the utter gall, to say it?

New York Senator Chuck Schumer went on NBC’s Meet the Press last week and the host, Kristen Welker, played a clip of Schumer from February speaking about President Joe Biden.  Schumer said, “His mental acuity is great, it’s fine.  It’s as good as it’s been over the years.  All this right-wing propaganda that his mental acuity has declined is wrong.”

Welker then asked Schumer if he felt he and other top Democrats misled the American public about Biden’s mental decline that was covered up by his staff, his congressional cronies and the compliant news media.

His answer was a curt three words.  “No, we didn’t.”  Shame on him.

Schumer should have spoken six words and said, “yes, we did and we’re sorry.”  But he can’t help himself.  He can’t stop lying.

Welker then asked Schumer if Biden had run for reelection and won, did the senator feel Biden would have had the cognitive ability to govern for another four years.  He dodged that question.  He rambled on about what he called Biden’s stellar achievements as president.

Also tucked into Schumer’s dissembling was the claim that Biden willingly stepped away from reelection.  He must think we’re idiots.  Everyone knows Biden didn’t want to bow out but was pushed out by Schumer along with Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.

Lying to Americans about Biden is but one example of Schumer’s deceitfulness.

How long has he been telling us that he was the shomer, the guardian of the American Jewish community and the US-Israel relationship?

Schumer’s nefarious actions belie his weasel words.

As anti-Jewish hatred infested American college campuses, the AAA, the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023, was drawn up by Washington lawmakers to codify the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism.  It gives the US Department of Education the power to enforce anti-discrimination laws where Jewish students have been intimidated and attacked.

It passed the House with an overwhelming bipartisan vote.

Schumer the shomer, was supposed to shepherd it through the US Senate.

He didn’t.

He was reportedly nervous that the progressive Democrats who support the campus Jew haters, would be pissed.  He played politics with the safety of Jewish Americans, and then blamed the Republicans for not letting him tack the AAA on to a wide-ranging defense bill.

This great defender of American Jews, this staunch foe of antisemitism, should have put his money where his oratory was and put the bill up for a floor vote.

No.  Instead, Schumer made the crass political decision not to allow a simple yes or no vote to help battle the tidal wave of antisemitism that’s roiling this nation.

American Jewish leaders have been biting their tongues about Schumer’s abandonment, but behind the scenes their disgust with him is palpable.

However, Chuck Schumer is anything but a fool and he knows he needs to cover his rear on this issue.  So, he’s written a book entitled “Antisemitism in America:  A Warning” that will be published in a couple of months.

According to its description on Amazon, “Chuck Schumer sheds light on the Jewish American experience and sounds the alarm about the troubling resurgence of antisemitism.”

That’s from the guy who couldn’t get the antisemitism act passed, but he could write a book.  That is a disgrace and a slap in the face to Jewish Americans.

But why are we surprised?

Just six months after October 7th, as the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas was raging, Chuck Schumer took himself to the floor of the US Senate, and in a scathing rebuke to Israel and its government, called for regime change in Jerusalem.

The leading US Senate Democrat, the most influential Jewish American politician, the highest-ranking Jewish politician ever to be elected in the United States, called on Israelis to boot Bibi Netanyahu, their democratically elected prime minister, from office.

Schumer said, “Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way.”  He called Netanyahu an obstacle to peace and for 40 minutes, he gave succor to Hamas and to Israel’s enemies.  He put lots of daylight between America and one of its closest allies in the midst of a bitter war for its survival.

Ironically, just this past week, the outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, every time there was daylight between America and Israel, it only strengthened Hamas, delaying the end of the war and the return of the hostages.

True, Schumer wasn’t the only Democrat that openly criticized Israel’s conduct of the war, but his criticism was the most impactful, the most dastardly and the most hurtful.

When House Speaker Mike Johnson boxed Schumer into a corner and invited Bibi Netanyahu to speak before a joint session of Congress last July, Schumer couldn’t do what Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi did and not attend, he couldn’t go that far, but he refused to shake Netanyahu’s hand.

How petty, how disrespectful, how un-shomer-like.

Schumer said he didn’t shake Bibi’s hand because he had “serious disagreements with the way Netanyahu has conducted these policies” referring to the way Israel had fought back against the Hamas terrorists.  He could have chosen to discuss his disagreements with Netanyahu in private, instead of trying to score political points with members of his caucus, which BTW, he also barred Netanyahu from addressing.

Our shomer?  Our watchman?  Our guardian?

Time and time again Chuck Schumer has proven to be something other than what he purports to be.

I refuse to ascribe the word shomer to Chuck Schumer.  But what’s the right word to call him?

Is it deplorable?  Is it dishonest?  Is it duplicitous?

Yes, yes and yes, but also, how about just plain pathetic.

A QUICK UPDATE

A couple of weeks ago I told you how disgraceful it was that Poland was threatening to enforce the ICC arrest warrant of Bibi Netanyahu if he attended the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz later this month.

Well just the other day, Poland backed down and said it would be safe for Netanyahu to attend the event.

Bibi’s office told the Poles, thanks but no thanks, he probably won’t go anyway.
